About Me

I’m Colin Sutton, a bass guitarist with over two decades of experience performing, recording, and teaching across a wide range of musical styles. Based in the UK, I’ve built a career that bridges the worlds of live performance, studio work, and music education — all driven by a deep love for the instrument and a curiosity for where it can take me.

As a performer, I’ve toured nationally and internationally with artists spanning genres from blues-rock to hip-hop, theatre, and experimental noise. I’ve played with acclaimed guitarist and singer Chantel McGregor, hip-hop ensemble Abstract Orchestra, and cult acts like Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip. I’ve also contributed to theatrical productions and session work for a range of bands and solo artists, adapting my playing style to suit everything from stripped-back acoustic to dense, high-energy arrangements.

My work in the studio is just as varied. Over the years, I’ve appeared on countless recordings — some released commercially, others created for film, theatre, or broadcast. I’m always interested in the musical conversation that happens during recording sessions: the process of building a sound, supporting an idea, and finding the right space for the bass within the mix.

Alongside my playing career, I’ve taught bass guitar for more than 25 years. I’ve worked with students of all ages and levels, from beginners picking up the instrument for the first time to emerging professionals refining their technique and musical understanding. For many years I’ve held a senior lecturer post in Popular Music at Leeds Conservatoire, where I teach on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. My approach to teaching is grounded in musicality, listening, and adaptability — giving players the tools they need to develop their own voice and succeed in the settings that matter most to them.

This site brings together some of the many threads of my work: you can explore recordings I’ve been involved with, learn more about my current projects, or get in touch about lessons — in person or online. Thanks for visiting.
